The dramatic vineyard that gives this wine its name is in the western hills of the Carneros District. It's one of the highest vineyards in the appellation, and sits in a foggy amphitheater facing southeast, towards the San Francisco Bay. The soil is crushed gravel and loam, mixed with granite and basalt. The yields are low, as are nutrient levels, and this rocky sub-soil gives the wine an intriguing mineral component.
